What is a Mobile Clinic Trip?
A MEDLIFE Mobile Clinic is a basic medical clinic that we bring directly to the poor. Staffed not only by general practitioners, each Clinic provides patients with dental, OB/GYN, and pediatric care, as well as access to preventative tests. Mobile Clinic participants have the opportunity to work closely with and learn from our medical professionals as they identify individuals in need of follow-up care. Participants will work alongside our staff at patient intake, triage and pharmacy, and also help run our educational programs. The typical Mobile Clinic week includes three days volunteering on-site at the Clinic, one day working with local community members on a development project, one day completing a tour of the project site, and two days of cultural tourism.
With a population of 9 million, Lima is the fourth-largest city in the Americas, and one of the most important financial centers in Latin America. As a tourist destination, it is famous for its diverse gastronomy, historic cultural sites, and nightlife.Lima is also home to extreme poverty, especially in the densely populated settlements on its outskirts. These areas, known as “pueblos jovenes,” have grown rapidly in recent years, as people migrated from the rural sierra of Peru to Lima in search of economic opportunity and an escape from the instability and violence of the 1980s. People also continue to migrate to Lima from rural areas of Peru in search of better access to basic services -- such as health care, education, and work opportunities -- that are often limited or completely absent in their home communities.
